Every summer, Philadelphia comes alive with festivals celebrating the city’s diverse communities. This year, one event continues to carve out its own lane by creating a space where culture, creativity, and community come together.
We caught up with Sonia Blount, Founder and CEO of Kabila Events, to talk about the fourth annual Culture Fest, which returns Saturday, June 27, to Liberty Point.
For Sonia, Culture Fest is more than just another festival. It is a celebration rooted in Philadelphia while welcoming cultures from around the world. Inspired by the international energy surrounding the 250th Celebration and Philadelphia’s growing role as a global destination, this year’s theme, Afro Street Style: A Celebration of the Diaspora, encourages people to celebrate both local pride and global connection.
Over the past four years, Culture Fest has grown into one of Philadelphia’s signature Black cultural experiences. What began as a community event has evolved into a highly anticipated summer tradition where fashion, music, entrepreneurship, and culture all meet in one place.
One of the most talked about parts of the festival is the fashion. What started organically has become a crowd favorite, with attendees planning their outfits months in advance and even competing for Best Dressed honors.
This year’s festival will feature live musical performances from local artists, Cultural Conversations led by respected Philadelphia voices, the annual Cultural Influencer Awards, live art demonstrations, dance competitions, double dutch, interactive experiences, and a marketplace showcasing Black-owned businesses from across the region.
The event also continues to shine a light on community leaders making an impact beyond the spotlight. Among this year’s Cultural Influencer Award recipients is Pastor Aaron Campbell of Level Up Philly, whose work mentoring thousands of young people continues to transform lives throughout the city.
Throughout our conversation, Sonia emphasized that Culture Fest is built on intentionality. From selecting performers to choosing vendors and honoring local changemakers, every decision centers around supporting people who are committed to their craft and invested in uplifting the community.
