Why Philly Transit Matters: A Real Conversation About Access, Equity, and Mobility

On ECO WURD, we sat down with Brennan, Co-Chair of the Housing Committee, and Morgan, Transit Advocacy Lead Representative from 5th Square Advocacy, to unpack how urban policy decisions directly shape daily life for Philadelphians.

The conversation explored the intersection of housing access, transportation systems, and environmental sustainability. Three issues that are often discussed separately but deeply connected in practice. Brennan spoke about the challenges renters and working families face in a city where housing costs continue to rise, while policy decisions too often overlook the voices of the communities most impacted by development and zoning changes.

Morgan highlighted how transportation access plays a critical role in opportunity and stability. Reliable public transit affects everything from job access to healthcare, education, and environmental outcomes. When transit systems are underfunded or inequitable, the burden falls hardest on communities that already face systemic barriers.

Both guests emphasized the importance of grassroots advocacy in shaping city policy. Rather than top down planning, they stressed the need for community informed solutions that reflect the lived experiences of residents, particularly those historically excluded from planning and decision making processes.
