How Philly Can Stop Illegal Dumping: Waste, Justice & Community Power with Tia Tynes

We spoke with Tia Tynes, Co-Director of Trash Academy, about one of Philadelphia’s most visible and once overlooked environmental justice issues, waste mismanagement and illegal dumping.

Trash Academy is a grassroots organization rooted in the belief that clean neighborhoods are a right, not a privilege. During the conversation, Tia broke down how illegal dumping disproportionately impacts working class communities and communities of color, contributing to health risks, environmental harm, and a sense of neglect that residents feel every day. From abandoned lots to alleyways turned dumping grounds, the issue isn’t just about trash it’s about accountability and access.

Tia also shared practical ways residents can better manage waste, from understanding proper disposal options to reporting illegal dumping and advocating for a stronger city response. She emphasized that while individual actions matter, long-term change requires systems that support communities with education, resources, and enforcement that actually work.

The conversation also highlighted how waste connects to broader environmental justice concerns, such as air quality, flooding, and public health. When trash piles up, it attracts pests, blocks storm drains, and sends a message that certain neighborhoods are disposable. Trash Academy’s work challenges that narrative by centering community leadership, education, and collective responsibility.

This conversation is a reminder that environmental justice starts right outside our front doors. Clean streets, safe disposal, and community pride go hand in hand and real change happens when residents are informed, supported, and heard.
