On 98.5 WJYN, we sat down with Markida Ross, a lifelong North Philly native and committed community advocate, to spotlight a call to action for a volunteer cleanup at the historic Church of the Advocate.
Markida, a mother of seven and a former school board member, has spent decades investing in Philadelphia’s youth and families. Her journey began in the 90s when she volunteered to help students with homework at the church’s after school program. “I saw one woman trying to do it all, and I knew I had to help,” she said. That moment sparked years of community service rooted in faith, equity, and legacy.
She reminded listeners that the Church of the Advocate isn’t just a building, it’s a movement. It was a safe haven for civil rights giants, the Black Panthers, artists, and women clergy. “This church fed families, housed the homeless, and gave voice to the voiceless,” Markida said.
The cleanup is more than just a beautification effort. It’s about preserving a landmark that shaped Philly’s history and can still serve future generations. Markida passionately addressed the generational divide in service, saying, “If we don’t feel good about ourselves, we won’t care to make anything better around us.”
Young people are especially encouraged to join, whether for community service hours, to give back, or to connect with elders who built the blocks they walk on today. All supplies will be provided, and refreshments will be served.
So, whether you’re bringing gloves, a donation, or just a willing heart, this is your chance to serve, be served, and secure the legacy of North Philly.
