Finding Peace, Power & Purpose: A Conversation with IUIC Philly’s Captain Joel

We sat down with Captain Joel from IUIC Philadelphia to unpack some of the most pressing issues facing Black and Brown communities, from seeking inner peace to navigating public scandals, generational trauma, and the ongoing fight for power and truth.

We kicked things off with the Word of the Day: Peace. But this wasn’t your typical “positive vibes only” conversation. Captain Joel broke down peace into two types: inner peace, which he says can only be found through spiritual grounding and the scriptures, and world peace, which he argues won’t exist until true justice is restored, specifically, for the descendants of the 12 tribes of Israel.

The conversation turned toward today’s headlines, especially the allegations surrounding music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. Captain Joel challenged listeners to not just focus on individuals, but on the systems and trauma that create a culture of silence and exploitation. He reminded us that “what’s done in the dark will come to light”—not as a cliché, but as a spiritual law rooted in scripture.

We also dove into the question of whether Black people can be racist, and Captain Joel offered a sharp distinction that racism requires economic, political, and institutional power, and what many people confuse as racism is often prejudice or reaction to oppression, not systemic control.

He made one powerful point “We don’t have true buying power; we have spending habits.” Black folks move over a trillion dollars annually, yet very little stays in our communities. “It’s not power, it’s a weakness,” he said.

Finally, we ended on how economic policies and political decisions like tax cuts for the wealthy and slashing social programs disproportionately impact poor and working class communities of color. “Our comfort was never meant to last,” he said. “We’re being forced to awaken, reflect, and return to who we are.”
