Each Friday on WURD Radio, P.O.C. is on a mission to make Philly cleaner, greener, and safer, and she’s not alone. City leaders and residents are stepping up this summer to join the One Philly United City Cleaning Program, a 13-week effort focused on revitalizing neighborhoods block by block.
This isn’t just about trash pickup. It’s about transformation. “We’re not doing one time cleanups. This is a commitment from Mayor Parker,” said Carlton Williams, Director of the Office of Clean and Green. From planting trees and clearing alleyways to tackling illegal dumping and creating green job opportunities, this initiative is about real change you can see and feel.
Youth looking for purpose or a second chance can get paid through the Philadelphia Future Track Program, a 6- to 9-month opportunity that includes environmental training, job skills, and city networking. “These are green jobs. We’re talking about cleaning vacant lots, planting gardens, and even helping stormwater drainage,” Williams shared. Applications are open now at http://www.phila.gov/sanitation.
But keeping Philly clean isn’t just the city’s job, it takes all of us. Residents are encouraged to report issues via 311, join cleanups, or become block captains. The city has also launched twice-a-week trash collections in high density areas like South Philly and is cracking down on illegal dumping from property owners and developers who treat the city like landfills.
The bottom line is that when we each do a little, our whole city shines. Whether you’re planting trees or simply respecting pickup schedules, your actions matter. A cleaner Philly starts with you.
