The PSA Media Literacy & Fundamentals of Journalism Workshop is designed to give young people the tools to understand media, tell their stories, and shape narratives that impact their communities. REVIVE Radio + Media partnered with both Career Discovery Network – Greater Philadelphia and The School District of Philadelphia PSTV: Philadelphia’s Student-Run TV Channel, for a four-week program that will blend journalism education, career exposure, and hands-on studio experience.
Students are introduced to the fundamentals of journalism, including ethics, credibility, and media responsibility, while learning how Public Service Announcements (PSAs) can inform, educate, and uplift communities. Through guided instruction and real world examples, participants explore how storytelling can be used as a tool for social impact.
A key component of the program is the NBCU Academy Fundamentals of Journalism credential, which offers students a nationally recognized learning opportunity. Those who complete the credential during the workshop are eligible for a $50 participation stipend, reinforcing the value of commitment and accountability.
The workshop also prioritizes confidence building. From in-person studio tours to live mic checks, students hear their own voices through professional equipment often for the first time helping them recognize the power they hold as communicators.
Beyond technical skills, the program emphasizes respect, collaboration, and civic responsibility. By the end of the workshop, students walk away with a deeper understanding of journalism, a clearer sense of career possibilities, and the confidence to use media as a force for truth and community change.
