Today on Eco WURD, we closed out 2024 with Maurice Sampson, Eastern PA Director of Clean Water Action, reflecting on a year of progress and ongoing challenges in Philadelphia’s fight for environmental justice. Sampson shared insights into the city’s grassroots greening initiatives, the impact of Mayor Cherelle Parker’s administration, and efforts to combat illegal dumping and waste mismanagement.
A significant win in 2024 was the launch of a community led greening plan in Kingsessing, funded by the William Penn Foundation. This initiative empowers residents to decide how to create sustainable, resilient neighborhoods. However, Sampson highlighted persistent challenges, including illegal dumping “legacy sites” and the lack of city enforcement to prevent repeat offenders. He also addressed the environmental toll of sending waste to incinerators in nearby Chester, Pennsylvania, calling for stronger recycling and waste reduction programs.
Looking ahead to 2025, Sampson emphasized the importance of local resilience amid potential federal rollbacks on environmental justice policies. With increasing climate impacts such as flooding and extreme heat, he urged communities to prioritize climate resilience through local action and partnerships. Sampson also pointed to new funding opportunities from the William Penn Foundation for Black and Brown communities, encouraging grassroots organizations to leverage these resources.
