Connecting Generations: REVIVE Media Brings Art, Conversation, and Community to West Philly Seniors

On November 21, 2023, REVIVE Radio + Media proudly hosted Art & Connection: A Community Gathering Bridging Generations Through Art and Conversation at the Simpson Fletcher Conestoga House in West Philadelphia. This second senior focused event of the year exemplified REVIVE’s mission to create safe spaces for community engagement and boost creativity, dialogue, and connection among diverse generations.

The event provided a much needed platform for seniors to engage in meaningful conversations and creative expression. Designed to support emotional well being, it encouraged storytelling and public health and safety awareness. With the support of the Philadelphia Department of Health, attendees received free resources, including over 50 COVID-19 test kits and pediatric and adult KN95 masks, ensuring that the senior community had the means to stay healthy and safe. As additional support, the health department brought their clinical team members together to do a quick presentation to answer senior questions and address their concerns.

REVIVE partnered with WHYY to introduce their “Bridging Block” initiative. During the event, seniors had the opportunity to interact with Generation Z college students. These students added a fresh perspective to the conversation, sharing their thoughts and learning from the wisdom of older attendees. This exchange of ideas created a spirited dialogue emphasizing shared values and intergenerational understanding.

Art played a pivotal role in fostering connections and self-expression. In collaboration with Philly Art Blog, attendees participated in hands on art activities, creating pieces that reflected their personal stories and visions for their community. These artistic contributions highlighted the therapeutic benefits of creativity and its ability to unite people from different walks of life.

Moderated by P.O.C., the community conversation touched on public health topics, resilience, mobility, transportation, and senior’s daily challenges. Co-moderator Serita Lewis, founder of Urbn Seek, added valuable insights, encouraging attendees to embrace solidarity and adding familiar comfort.

This event’s success has inspired a series of gatherings planned for 2025, as requested by the community. These events will continue prioritizing creating inclusive senior spaces, encouraging dialogue, and addressing community needs.

REVIVE Radio + Media is dedicated to telling stories “for the community, by the community.” Through partnerships with organizations like Urbn Seek, WHYY, Philly Art Blog, and the Philadelphia Department of Health, REVIVE continues to amplify voices that matter.

By incorporating perspectives from seniors and younger generations, Art & Connection demonstrated the strength of intergenerational collaboration. This event reinforced the importance of unity and shared storytelling in building a resilient, connected community.
