Speaker of the Pennsylvania House Joanna McClinton joined P.O.C. on EcoWURD to talk about real solutions for real people across Philadelphia. The conversation centered on something many families are feeling right now rising food costs, limited access to grocery stores, and the everyday struggle to make ends meet.
To meet that need, McClinton has been hosting monthly food giveaways in partnership with PA House Representative Amen Brown and Caring for Friends. These efforts are about more than handing out groceries. They are about meeting residents where they are and making sure no one is left behind.
In neighborhoods like Southwest Philly, where food deserts are a real issue, access matters. Many residents do not live within walking distance of a full grocery store. That means higher costs, longer travel, and fewer healthy options. By bringing food directly into the community, these giveaways remove barriers and create immediate relief for families.
Speaker McClinton made it clear that this work is about dignity and support, not charity. “We want to make sure that our neighbors get ahead,” she shared, highlighting how her office connects residents to additional resources like utility assistance programs and financial support. With rising energy costs and the return of seasonal utility shutoffs, these connections can be just as critical as the food itself.
The initiative also tackles a deeper issue of food insecurity as a public health and public safety concern. When families are struggling to put meals on the table, the stress impacts everything from mental health to community stability. By ensuring families have access to nutritious food, these programs help reduce pressure at home and create a stronger foundation for youth and parents alike.
At its core, this initiative is about rebuilding trust between communities and the systems meant to serve them by showing up consistently and providing tangible help.
