Organizing Community Voices: BDBC Philly Advocates Push for Community Protection at ICE Out Lobby Day

Community organizers, advocates, and residents gathered in Philadelphia to raise awareness and push for policy change around immigrant protections during a recent ICE Out Philly lobby day on March 2, 2026. The event brought together grassroots leaders and community members committed to ensuring that vulnerable communities are protected in a city that prides itself on diversity and inclusion.

The discussion featured community organizer Tsehaitu Abye, who is working on the frontlines at the intersection of advocacy, organizing, and entrepreneurship. Abye talks about how her work centers on building community power while advocating for policies that protect immigrant families and strengthen civic engagement across Philadelphia.

The lobby day focused on seven proposed pieces of legislation commonly referred to as the ICE Out package, a group of bills aimed at strengthening protections for immigrant communities within the city. Abye explains that BDBC’s efforts are part of a broader strategy that includes policy advocacy, public education, and coalition-building across multiple sectors.

During the conversation, Abye reflected on how her personal experiences shaped her commitment to organizing. She described how her father immigrated to the United States from Ethiopia and faced challenges that many immigrants encounter when navigating systems that can feel confusing and hostile. Those experiences ultimately inspired her to build platforms that center education, empowerment, and protection for marginalized communities.

The ICE Out Philly effort is not a single event or protest but part of a broader movement involving dozens of immigrant rights organizations working together. BDBC members believe local government has a responsibility to ensure that residents are not unfairly targeted or placed in unsafe situations due to immigration enforcement actions.

Events like this lobby day also highlight the growing intersection between media, organizing, and civic participation. As communities across Philadelphia continue to face challenges ranging from immigration concerns to housing instability, grassroots leaders are working to ensure residents are informed, engaged, and empowered to shape policy decisions.

BDBC says the message is clear, “ICE Out Philly!” Advocacy is not limited to a single moment or event. It is part of an ongoing effort to ensure that Philadelphia remains a city where every resident, regardless of background, has the opportunity to live safely and with dignity.

As the conversation continues across city government and community spaces, BDBC organizers say they will remain committed to building coalitions, educating residents, and pushing for policies that reflect the values of the communities they represent.
