Preserving West Philly’s Legacy: A Conversation with Rashida Watson of The Silk Tent

On WJYN 98.5 FM, a familiar voice was welcomed back to Philadelphia’s airwaves, Rashida Watson, owner and founder of The Silk Tent and Ultra Silk Gallery. A longtime fixture on Lancaster Avenue, Watson joined us to share details about the upcoming Freedom Now Fest, a vibrant celebration of community, culture, and the historic 1965 visit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to West Philadelphia.

Watson, a passionate advocate for cultural preservation, emphasized the importance of the event as a tool for reclaiming neighborhood pride amid rapid gentrification. “This is about more than a block party,” she explained. “It’s about remembering our legacy, telling our stories, and making sure our youth feel connected to the spaces they live in.”

The Freedom Now Fest, taking place on August 3rd from 1–6 p.m. along 38th to 40th Street on Lancaster Avenue, will feature live music, drumming, food trucks, art vendors, film screenings, and historic footage of Dr. King’s speech. Watson emphasized the importance of visual storytelling, particularly a documentary-style video, supported by Scribe Video Center, that features interviews with Philadelphia elders who were present during Dr. King’s 1965 appearance in the city.

As a Black business owner operating in the heart of West Philadelphia for seven years, Watson discussed the challenges and the power of community unity amid development pressures. We discussed that while retail is shifting online, The Silk Tent thrives on face-to-face storytelling, workshops, and cultural events. “It’s not just about buying something — it’s about understanding its meaning and connecting to your roots.”

In a world captivated by screens and AI, Watson reminded listeners that living history is all around us in our neighbors, our elders, and our local spaces. “Talk to someone. Hear their story. That knowledge is powerful and it’s ours.”
