APRIL MOI: PHILLY’S NEW VOICE IN R&B TELLS HER STORY THROUGH SOUND

Today’s R&B scene may feel saturated with trends, but rising Philadelphia artist April Moi is creating a lane rooted in real life storytelling, classical training, and powerful vocals. April blends traditional R&B with neo-soul influences and lived experience, offering music that is both vulnerable and refreshing.

Her latest EP, titled One, is a three-track reflection on transformation. The standout single, “I Won,” was inspired by her personal journey of navigating a breakup, job loss, and homeownership all within a short window of time. The music, as she puts it, is a testimony of survival. “Despite it all, I won,” she says.

A proud Philadelphian, April Moi brings authenticity to her music. Her musical journey began early, as she sang in the church and participated in school choirs, which featured classical music, and later continued at Cheyney University. This formal training, combined with her gospel roots, gives her vocals a distinct sound that sets her apart from many of today’s artists. “Classical music taught me discipline,” she shared in a recent interview. “It showed me a different world.”

What makes April Moi particularly unique is her commitment to balance confidence over shock value, class over trend. While her music is empowering and sensual, it remains thoughtful and aligned with the values she upholds through her mentorship program, Moi: Me Overcoming Insecurities. The program, currently on pause as she focuses on music, but her program uplifts young Black girls by encouraging self worth and identity outside societal norms.

Collaborating with Philly producers and artists, April is committed to representing her city while redefining what modern R&B can look and sound like. With authenticity at the core of her artistry, April Moi is not only singing notes, she’s telling stories Philly listeners can feel.
