From Philly Stages to Healing Sounds: Rae.Dianz Talks Black Music, Family, and Slowing Down

In the heart of Philadelphia’s vibrant music scene, Rae. Dianz is more than a performer, she’s a movement. Known for blending hip-hop, soul, and live instrumentation with her signature flute, Rae has been making waves across stages like World Cafe Live, Silk City, and Fringe Arts. But behind the scenes, she’s building something much deeper. Healing through music, family, and community.

During our recent interview on WJYN 98.5 FM, Rae opened up about how music helped shape her artistry, but also helped her rebuild her relationship with her father. Her latest project, supported by the Black Music City Grant, is a tribute to those intergenerational ties, using music to connect across generations and bring people closer to their roots.

With her band, The Sunrae Collective, Rae leads a rotating crew of talented Philly musicians, creating what she calls “expansive, healing soundscapes.” It’s jazz, it’s hip-hop, it’s house, it’s whatever the moment needs. And for Rae, every show is a ritual.

Her new single, Slow Down, drops this week, reminding artists and dreamers alike that the grind is real, but so is burnout. “The whole point of this is to express yourself, not to overly prove yourself,” Rae shared.

While navigating personal growth, music industry politics, and Philly’s ever-changing creative spaces, Rae remains focused on creating safe spaces for other artists to thrive. Her message is clear, keep going, but don’t lose yourself in the hustle.
