Philadelphia City Controller Christy Brady recently appeared on Revive Radio on 98.5 WJYN to discuss mid-term elections, city budgets, mismanagement, and making our city work better for the people. In a no-fluff conversation, Brady explained what her office really does and why it matters for everyday Philadelphians.
“Think of us as the city’s financial watchdog,” Brady told listeners. “We audit where the money’s going, and if something doesn’t look right, we let the people know.”
Brady isn’t new to this. She started as an entry-level auditor in the Controller’s office over 30 years ago. After climbing the ranks, she was appointed Controller in 2022. Now, she’s running officially for the first time and unopposed.
One major issue she spotlighted during our conversation is the misuse of the Homestead Exemption, a program meant to help homeowners lower their property taxes. “We found over $11 million in losses yearly, half of which is meant for schools,” she said.
She also raised red flags on the city’s $500 million Rebuild Program, pointing out delayed rec center renovations that ballooned from $4 million to $20 million without breaking ground. “We can’t keep making young people wait for safe spaces to grow,” she said.
Brady laughed when asked who rings her line more, the Mayor or the City Council President. “I work with everyone. My job is to speak up for what’s right.”
With the mid-term election day on May 20th, Brady reminds residents that transparency starts with leadership. “This city gave me everything,” she said. “Now I want to give back by holding it accountable.”
