Philadelphia is a city of neighborhoods! Blocks full of history, flavor, and resilience. But what happens when developers snatch up the land on those blocks, leaving residents with little say and less access?
On Eco WURD, Minority Leader Councilmember At-Large Kendra Brooks joined host P.O.C. to talk real about land banks, green equity, and how reclaiming vacant lots can restore power to the people. “He who owns the land, owns the wealth,” Brooks said. “And we’re making sure our communities aren’t left behind.”
This isn’t just talk. Through partnerships with the Neighborhood Gardens Trust and years of groundwork by local residents, Brooks is pushing legislation to secure over 90 plots for long-term community use. That means more gardens, less dumping, more fresh food, fewer boarded up eyesores, and more control staying in the hands of those who built Philly’s core.
