Building Futures: How Mr. Jarrett is Teaching Philly Students Solar Energy and Trades

On Eco WURD, we sat down with Mr. Evin Jarrett, aka “The Dope Teacher,” a trades instructor at Mayfair Middle School, transforming how students in Philadelphia see their futures. Known for creating hands-on learning experiences, Jarrett’s program integrates carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and solar energy, giving students real-world skills and exposure to the renewable energy sector.

Jarrett spoke about his journey, from working in the trades to developing a middle school curriculum that pushes boundaries. His innovative approach includes solar training inside and outside his classroom, where students as young as 5th grade install solar panels and work safely on projects typically seen in high school or beyond.

Beyond the classroom, Jarrett runs a summer program where students engage in practical work under his guidance. “It’s about creating options for these kids,” Jarrett said. “I want them to graduate with skills that open doors, whether in the trades or renewable energy.”

Jarrett’s commitment goes beyond technical skills. Through his podcast, which is entirely solar-powered, he connects students with industry professionals. These interactions inspire students and show them the diverse opportunities available in the trades. However, funding remains challenging, and Jarrett often covers costs out of pocket to ensure his students have the necessary resources.

Jarrett called on the community to support his mission through donations or simply by spreading the word about the importance of trade education. His work is not just about skills. It’s about empowering the next generation to lead in sustainability and innovation.
