Faith & Freedom Exploring Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Black Identity W/ Captain Joel Of IUIC Philadelphia

Captain Joel from IUIC Philadelphia joins P.O.C. for a conversation centered on faith, liberation, and celebrating. As the year winds down, he talked about the significance of Hanukkah and Kwanzaa and how Black and Brown communities can find meaning in their cultural and spiritual roots.

Captain Joel emphasized Hanukkah’s powerful history as a celebration of Black liberation. He traced its origins to the Maccabean revolt, likening it to revolutions like the Haitian Revolution, which empowered oppressed communities to reclaim their freedom. “Hanukkah is not just a holiday. It’s a reminder of the strength and resilience of Black people throughout history,” he explained.

In discussing Kwanzaa, he acknowledged its growing popularity among Black communities as a way to celebrate cultural pride and identity. However, he encouraged listeners to seek a deeper understanding of their ancestral roots and spiritual traditions.

Captain Joel also reflected on modern celebrations, cautioning against commercializing holidays like Christmas, which he argued often lack genuine cultural or historical relevance to Black people. Instead, he called for reflection on traditions that genuinely resonate with the spirit of community, family, and revolution.

The conversation wasn’t limited to holidays. Captain Joel discussed broader societal issues, including the challenges of poverty, systemic oppression, the presidential election 2024, and the search for Black identity in America. He urged listeners to study their origins and embrace practices that honor their heritage, reminding everyone, “The Bible is a Black book—it’s time we reclaim our narrative.”
