We spoke with Vivian Chang, Executive Director of Asian Americans United (AAU), about the fight to stop the 76ers Arena from being built in Philly’s Chinatown. After two years of protests, city meetings, and community organizing, the billion-dollar development is no longer moving forward, marking a significant victory for Chinatown residents and allies. The 76ers are staying in South Philly!

Despite this win, concerns remain. The city’s decision prioritized corporate interests over community voices, exposing deep rooted power inequalities. While residents feel relief, they remain attentive to future threats of displacement, gentrification, and rising costs that could push out longtime businesses and families.

Chinatown’s fight is a lesson in grassroots organizing, solidarity, and resistance. As Philly continues to develop, communities across the city must stay active to protect their homes, culture, and history.
