We recently spoke with Sophia Schmidt, a Philadelphia-based environmental journalist, about key environmental initiatives reshaping the city’s future. Schmidt discussed the redevelopment of the former Philadelphia Energy Solutions (PES) refinery site and Philadelphia’s progressive efforts to expand electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. Both projects marked significant strides toward enhancing environmental justice and public health, particularly in neighborhoods disproportionately affected by pollution.

The PES refinery site, once the East Coast’s largest and most polluting refinery, had long impacted its South Philadelphia neighbors. After it closed following a major explosion and fire in 2019, the site became the focus of a large-scale redevelopment plan aimed at transforming it into a sustainable industry hub. Tax incentives played an important role in encouraging green businesses to establish operations there, creating new employment opportunities within the community. Schmidt noted that redevelopment efforts focused on drawing eco-friendly businesses, emphasizing clean energy, sustainable manufacturing, and other green innovations.

This project marked a turning point for the local environment and the economy. Former refinery sites are often contaminated, but by promoting sustainable industries, the city aimed to reduce health hazards and provide employment that directly benefited surrounding neighborhoods. Community advocates had actively pushed for redevelopment that considered residents’ needs, including promises of green space, pollution reduction, and economic benefits. Philadelphia’s efforts to involve the community in planning helped establish a more equitable, sustainable future.

In addition to redevelopment, Philadelphia worked to address the rising demand for cleaner transportation. One key focus was increasing the number of EV chargers throughout the city. As part of a broader push to promote electric vehicles and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, recent legislation paved the way for improved EV infrastructure, adding fines as a price to include more working and accessible public charging stations. Expanding EV chargers not only supported those already using electric vehicles but also encouraged more residents to switch by ensuring charging convenience.

Together, these initiatives laid a stronger foundation for Philadelphia’s environmental future. The redevelopment of the PES refinery site and the expansion of the EV infrastructure showcased the city’s commitment to addressing pollution, fostering sustainable growth, and benefiting all residents. As Philadelphia moved forward, its dedication to sustainability and environmental justice offered a model for other urban areas facing similar challenges.
