On Eco WURD, we spoke with Karen, “Goat Mom,” the director of the Philly Goat Project, and Leslie, “Folxherder,” and the director of operations, about how goats are transforming community connections in Germantown. What started as a backyard passion project has become a unique nonprofit blending environmental justice, health equity, and urban engagement, centered around a herd of friendly goats.

Located at Awbury Arboretum, the Philly Goat Project brings people together through innovative programs like goat walks, urban agriculture, and interactive events. The goats serve as more than just animals; they serve as a bridge to reduce isolation and foster connections among neighbors. Their popular Goat Walks, which invite residents to stroll the streets with the goats, are more than fun. They’re social gatherings designed to bring nature and community closer together.

The project isn’t just about goats it’s about people. Philly Goat Project provides educational workshops and a garden collective and even hosts free events like the 7th Annual Tree-Cycle Festival. This family-friendly event encourages residents to recycle their Christmas trees while enjoying games, fire pits, and plenty of time with the goats.

Karen and Leslie also highlighted the importance of inclusivity, working to ensure that their programs reflect and serve the diverse Philadelphia community. Their partnerships with organizations like Black Girls with Green Thumbs and In Color Birding help create spaces where everyone feels welcome.
